Huston Street Loses Closer Job To Manny Corpas

We predicted it before the season started and now it has happened. Huston Street is out as Rockies closer according to sources in Denver. Manny Corpas will become the closer and should have success. If he is available in your leagues, get him. He has closed before for the Rockies with 23 saves over two season and should do alright. He has had problems, so this might be a good pick up and trade scenario if you can get him. Personally, I don't like closers in Colorado.

Rockies Closer in Flux

Reportedly Colorado Rockies manager Clint Hurdle will 'reassess' who will be the closer for the Rockies. Huston Street is presently holding the job but has not impressed anyone (2.2 Innings, 4 Runs, 1 Walk, 2 Ks, 1 Loss, 1 Save, 13.5 ERA). Corpas, however, has been good so far (4.1 Innings, 2 Runs, 3 Ks, 4.15 ERA). Street won the closer battle in pre-season, but Corpas looks to be winning it now - when it counts. Probably want to pick him up and see what happens. -Scout Monkey

Colorado Rockies Closer Report

Huston Street had another rough outing today. He came in to pitch the 9th in a non-save situation, but quickly turned it into one. He gave up a home run to to Derek Lee, and then followed that with single and a walk before Clint Hurdle pulled him for Jason Grilli.

We have never had confidence in Huston Street pitching in Colorado. Its a big risk, and a bad ball park to pitch in if you can't command your stuff. Today wasn't in Colorado, but he is bound to have adventures when the Rockies go home.

Currently, according to reports, he is still the closer, he was just ineffective and was removed. Don't pick up Grilli. If Corpas was available he would have pitched, but he was used in the 8th.

We recommend picking up Manny Corpas if he is available on your waiver wire. We suspect before long he will be the Rockies closer.

Closers In Line

With many closers starting off quite poorly, there are a few setup men out there that can evolve into serviceable closers. Manny Corpas(COL)- Huston Street is leaving off right where he left off last year. 5.40 ERA and 2.40 WHIP. When Billy Beane gets rid of you he knows your best days are behind you. Corpas has been lights out so far. Not allowing any runs and has a WHIP under .50. Corpas will be the closer by mid-May. Michael Wuertz(OAK)- Everyone is starting to catch on to Brad Ziegler and Joey Devine has visited Dr. James Andrews which is never good. There are a ton of young arms out there in Oakland but as of right now Wuertz has been the front runner to replace Ziegler assuming he doesn't turn it around. Wuertz only owned in 3% of Yahoo leagues. Jensen Lewis(CLE)- This is a long shot but Kerry Wood is one blister on his finger from being out for the season. Jensen has not been great to start the year but last year he closed 13 of 14 games for the Tribe. Keep Jensen on your watch list he's only owned in 2% of Yahoo leagues. Scout Berardi
