2005 FANTASY BASEBALL DRAFT TIPS

_____________________

Most players base their entire season on the Fantasy Baseball Draft. Your team does not live and die with the draft, but of course it is important.

- When conducting your Fantasy Baseball Draft the best advice is to play it safe. Don’t try to out smart yourself, draft a balance of pitching and offense.

- Look at positions that are thin, like 2B for example, and make sure you get yours.

-Draft a “sure thing” veteran starting pitcher.

-Draft a veteran big bat.

-After that, use player rankings early in the draft to guide you in your Fantasy Baseball Draft.

-Save gambles for middle and late rounds.

-Go into the draft with a small draft plan and some sleepers. Then throw away your plan. The most important thing during the draft is to ADAPT! Notice what positions are and are not being drafted. Can you hold off on drafting your first basemen because everyone has already drafted one? Was there a run on starting pitchers? You better get one, even if it is a slightly over-priced player. Go with the flow of the draft and you will do better than sticking to a plan.

-If you are new to drafting and your league offers an auto-draft option, use it. This will give you a safely drafted team.

-One last tip for the draft may be the most important. Draft closers. They do not grow on trees. They score big and use few innings. . In most Fantasy Baseball leagues closers are valuable and can’t really be replaced.

2005 FANTASY BASEBALL DRAFT SLEEPERS

_____________________

Pitchers

Roy Halladay SP - Not a new name, but after an down 2004, he should fall in the draft. Don't let him fall too far.

Oliver Perez SP - Big strikeout pitcher, 12-10 with a 2.98 ERA. Only drawback is he plays for the Pirates.

Jeremy Affledt RP/SP - Royal closer should qualify to be put in as a SP, yet gives you RP value. Did a good job as a closer.

Matt Clement SP - Move to Boston might hurt ERA, but will help the more important win-loss record. Big strikeouts too.

Jake Westbrook SP - Nice late round pick. 14-9 and a 3.38 ERA.

Brandon Webb SP - Arizona has improved and that should improve his awful 7-16 record last year. Does have 336 K's in 388 inning with an ERA of 3.24 in his first 2 years.

Livan Hernandez SP - The Nationals are much better than last years Expos. Livan's 3.60 ERA and solid K's should be a recipe for a good fantasy pitcher.

Bob Wickman RP - At one time was a very good closer. Looked like he was back at the end of the 2004 season.

Jeremy Bonderman SP - Not the most amazing stats as a rookis, but has big talent and is looking sharp in spring training.

Infielders

Marcus Giles 2B - Possibly the best 2B in baseball.

Melvin Mora 3B - Big stats, no respect. Same gamble as Beltre at a cheaper price.

Chipper Jones 3B/OF - Only hit .248, but played better after moving back to third base. Should fall in the draft.

Jack Wilson SS - Great value in the lower rounds.

Juan Uribe SS/2B - Makes a great back up at 26 could be a future star.

Khalil Greene SS - Late round sleeper could be a .290 20 HR shortstop.

Pedro Feliz - SS/3B/1B - Another great back up with a world of potential. .276 22 HR's, not bad.

Chone Figgins 2B/3B/OF - Positions, 17 Triples, 34 stolen bases and a .296 Avg.

Travis Haffner 1B - Broke out with 28 HR's and a .311 average with only 482 at bats.

Brandon Inge - C/3B - Solid, but goes in as starting 3B and qualifies for a catcher. Do the math.

David Wright 3B - Better days in Shea and Wright could be in the middle of it. .293, 14 HR's at 22.

Justin Morneau 1B - The 23 year old hit 19 HR's and .271. Worth a late-mid round shot.

Aaron Miles 2B - Based on the weakness of the position, youth and he plays for Colorado. Batted .293 as a rookie.

Jose Vidro 2B - At least he is a National, not an Expo. When healthy, a top 5 second basemen.

2B Ruben Gotay - Desperate positions call for desperate sleepers. He is having a big spring training.

2B Tadahito Iguchi - Expected to start and bat second in a big lineup. Worth a shot.

Outfielders

Aaron Rowand OF - This guy could be a stud. 30-30 potential and hit .310.

Trot Nixon OF - Before the injury broke out with 28 HR's and .306 with only 441 at bats in 2004.

Carlos Lee OF - Should be available late Consistent .300 30 HR 100 RBI's and 15 SB's.

Vernon Wells OF - Don't forget about Vernon. Potential, but at least a solid .280 and 25 HR's.

Willy Mo Pena OF - 23 years old, .59 and 26 HR's with 336 at bats. Nice gamble.

Jason Bay OF - 26 HR's and a .282 average with 411 at bats as a rookie.

Richard Hildago OF - Hit 21 HR's with .324 at bats but only a .228 average in NY. The move to Texas (Rangers) could help big.

Preston Wilson OF - Bad year with an injury in 2004. Bats in Colorado and has power and speed. Draft him!

Brian Giles OF - One time fantasy stud has been vanquished to pitcher friendly San Diego. The Padres have patched together a solid offense and Giles still batted .284 with 23 HR's and 94 RBI's.

Jason Lane OF - Nice power, will start in Houston. Those are good reasons to take a shot. Doing good in spring training.

Rookies

Clint Barmes SS - Colorado is always a worthy gamble. Power and speed in the minors.

Dallas McPherson 3B - Will start for the Angels .317 and 40 HR's in the minors.

Felix Hernandez SP - Probably a bit young to help this season, but keep on eye on this monster talent.

Chris Burke 2B - Will start 2B for the Astros. Looks like the real deal and fantasy baseball needs some 2B's.
