2011 Fantasy Baseball Sleeper Report

Outfield Bargains |
Player |
Pos |
| Colby Rasmus - St.
Louis Cardinals - If not for his weak hitting against
lefties, Rasmus would already be one of the best young
fantasy outfielders in baseball. As a rookie in 2009 he
batted a dismal .160 versus lefties, but the good news
is he improved that to .270 in 2010. He is still likely
to sit out many games do to his lower production against
lefties, but the Cardinals want him to be their everyday
center fielder and he should see his playing time increase
in 2011.
In 2010 he batted .276 with 23 home runs and 12 stolen
bases and if the 24-year-old can take the next step he
could be a .290, 25-30 home run hitter with good speed
and plenty of runs and RBI's. |
CF |
| Franklin Gutiérrez
- Seattle Mariners - Another
failed Mariner who should tumble in the draft, but should
also rebound from a disastrous 2010 where he batted .245,
with 12 home runs.
Gutiérrez found himself on the fantasy radar in
2009 after batting .284 with 18 home runs and 16 stolen
bases.
The speedy prospect is now in his prime at age 28 and
he could be in for his best season yet, if the Seattle
Mariners can hit better as a team. .275, 17 home runs
and 23 stolen bases in 2011 would make him a solid low-end
fantasy starter and an end of the draft bargain. |
CF |
| Rajai Davis - Toronto
Blue Jays - Davis broke out towards the end of
2009 in Oakland and continued it in to 2010 when he batted
.284 with 50 stolen bases. Moving to Toronto in 2011 should
help improve his numbers, particularly runs. While he
will never be a star, Davis can help you in stolen bases
and runs and bat right around .300 |

Pitching Bargains |
Player |
Pos |
| Joe Nathan - Minnesota
Twins - Spring training will tell us more, but
if Joe Nathan is healthy in 2011, he should return as
one of the most dominate closers in baseball. Some owners
will forget about him, others will be scared. Let him
fall a bit, but if he is pitching well in spring training
don't let him fall too far. |
RP |
| J.J. Putz - Arizona
Diamondbacks - The one-time closer-great has been
healthy and pitching well and will finally get another
shot at closing. The Diamondback closer's job is usually
one of the more coveted ones in fantasy baseball because
of their usual solid pitching and relativley low scoring
offense, so Putz could be a gem.
In 2010 Putz went 7-5 with 3 saves and a 2.83 ERA. He
also posted 65 strikeouts in 54 innings. Lets not forget
in 2006 and 2007 when Putz nailed 76 saves, posted an
average ERA of under 2.00 and had 186 strikeouts in 156
innings. |
RP |
| Chris Perez - Cleveland
Indians - The highly-touted closer prospect finally
showed his abilities in 2010 when he nailed 23 of 27 saves
and a posted a dominating 1.71 ERA. Many fantasy owners
do not get too excited about drafting the closer for the
hapless Indians, but like the Royals, they do win sometimes
and when they do, it is usually a close game. 40 saves
is not out of the question for Perez in 2011. |
RP |
| John Axford - Milwaukee
Brewers - Axford blossomed late in 2009 and became
a dominate closer finishing with 24 of 27 saves with a
2.48 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 58 innings. The Brewers
added starting pitchers Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum
to the rotation and this should keep Axford busy in 2011. |
RP |
| Ryan Dempster - Chicago
Cubs - He is likely to fall late in the draft as
he usually does and then post a season close to much higher
draft picks. In 2010 he went 15-12 with a 3.85 ERA and
nailed an impressive 208 strikeouts in 215.1 innings.
The veteran has posted 3 consecutive seasons with an ERA
under 4.00 and averaged about 14 wins and 207 strikeouts
in this time. |
